RAF BBMF Spitfire in D-Day Stripes Coningsby October 2013 Photo Print
A Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire taxies across the airfield at RAF Coningsby on 17 October 2013, the pilot in the cockpit and the propeller a blur. The aircraft had just been repainted with black and white invasion stripes on the wings and rear fuselage, and this was its first flight in the new scheme. The toned, near-monochrome finish leaves the yellow wing leading edges picked out against a grey, streaked sky.
Invasion stripes were painted onto Allied fighters and bombers in the days before Operation Overlord in June 1944 so that ships and ground gunners could recognise friendly aircraft over the Normandy beaches. The Memorial Flight has been based at Coningsby in Lincolnshire since 1976, and its aircraft are repainted every few years during winter maintenance to represent a different wartime squadron or pilot. This photograph was one of nine shortlisted for the public vote in the RAF Photographic Competition 2014.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
